What are Damp Proofing guarantees?
There are three main types of guarantees associated with damp proofing work. Understanding the differences can help you choose the right protection for your property.
1. Contractor's guarantee
A contractor's guarantee is provided by the company carrying out the work. It typically covers specified defects in the workmanship for an agreed period. However, if the contractor ceases trading, they may longer be able to honour their guarantee, potentially leaving the customer without protection.
2. Manufacturer's guarantee
A manufacturer's guarantee covers specific products or materials used during damp proofing, such as damp proof (DPC) treatments. This type relates to the performance of the product rather than the quality of the contractor's workmanship. The duration and level of protection depend on the manufacturer's terms.
3. GPI Guarantees™
A GPI Guarantee™ provides additional protection if the orginal contractor ceases trading and is unable to honour their guarantee. Subject to policy terms, eligble claims may cover the cost of the materials and labour required to rectify covered defects, up to the agreed claim limit and within the applicable guarantee period.
What does a GPI Guarantee™ cover?
It commonly covers:
- Failure of the damp-proofing treatment — for example, rising damp returning after a new chemical DPC has been installed.
- The treated area — usually only the walls and areas specifically identified in the original survey/quotation.
- Remedial treatment — if the installed system fails within the guarantee period, GPI Guarantees™ will investigate and undertake remedial work.
- A specified period, often 10, 20 or 30 years.
- A claim limit of up to £500,000.
Our protected Guarantee department has been issuing GPI Guarantees™ for over 8 years and have issued over £110,000,000 of active GPI Guarantees™ since 2018
Not a single claim remains outstanding. We are the only Guarantee provider in the UK with its own network of structural and remedial repair contractors covering the entire UK and Northern Ireland or accept a cash settlement in full.
GPI Guarantees™ will undertake all the necessary re-treatment works if a Claim is made.

Providing Guarantees for glazing, roofing, waterproofing, damp and timber treatment, renovations, loft and building extensions, basement conversions, basement water proofing, garage conversions, structural repairs including underpinning, wall ties and helical bars.

Lasting Support
The Guarantee terms are 10, 20 or 30 years, excluding underground developments which have a fixed term of 10 years. Our Guarantees are offered to the building owner or building contractor. Our Guarantees are a fixed fee. All our Guarantees are backed by London Underwriter's.

What we need
You will need to provide drawings of any renovation or development, an invoice showing the cost of the works and the original quotation or specification outlining the scope of works. Once we have this information we will provide a quotation for a fixed term Guarantee.

Under GPI Guarantee™ terms and conditions if any Rising Damp, Timber treatment, Structural repair or Basement water proofing defect occurs, we will instruct one of our approved contractors to visit and treat the entire property as necessary, free of any charge, as detailed in our written Guarantee.
The Guarantee remains valid irrespective of any notifiable transfers of ownership of the property within the unexpired period of cover of the Guarantee.

The up to 30 Year Protected GPI Guarantee™ is issued for a small one-off premium payment.
The fundamental strength of our up to 30 Year Protected GPI Guarantee™ is that it is issued entirely independently of any Manufacturing Company. It should be noted Chemical Companies Guarantees are worthless they only Guarantee their products not workmanship and labour. GPI Guarantees are fully comprehensive of materials, labour and making good decorations. No other Guarantee provider in the UK offers this unique service.
We aim to resolve any Guarantee claim within 14 days to include a technical Surveyor and comprehensive repairs conducted. Some Guarantee provides take up to a year to provide the same level of repairs.

Monies are held in a separate account to meet any future claims. Being financially viable is so important for a business and provides reassurance to our clients.
GPI Guarantees™ are issued for terms ranging from 10 years to 30 years. Premiums vary from as little as 3% to 5% of the works contact value Guaranteed.
GPI Guarantee applications are open to anyone as long as no pre-existing fault or damage is present.
Minimum costs for a GPI Guarantee™ is £100.00 + VAT
Importantly 99.9% of all claims are accepted. We are a non profit making organisation. Claims undertaken by our approved network of specialist contractors.
All claims are dealt with by an independent Surveyor and Member of the Royal Institute Of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).
Our network of Surveyors covers the entire UK Including Northern Ireland.
Our Guarantees are Underwritten on an annual basis by London Underwriters.
The policy has a yearly aggregate limit for claims of £500,000.
